How to Create Partition for Windows 7 Hard Disk

There are two types of partition on hard disk, system partition and boot partition. The system partition contains the hard-ware related files and the boot folder that are helpful in starting windows in computer. By default, Windows 7 creates a separate system partition of 100 MB, when it is installed from scratch on an unpartitioned hard disk. A boot partition is a partition that contains Windows operating system files. For example, if you have a multiboot computer that contains Windows Vista on one volume and Windows 7 on another, then each of those volumes are considered boot partitions.

Steps to create a new partition on a Windows 7 hard disk are as follows,

• At the command prompt type diskmgmt.msc.
• Right-click an unallocated or free area, in disk management’s graphical view, then click new simple view.
• Read the Welcome page and then click next.
• Size the volume between the minimum and maximum size limit.
• Size the partition in megabytes using the Simple Volume Size field and then click next.
• On the Assign Drive Letter or Path page, specify whether you want to assign a drive letter or path and then click next.
• The options which you will get are follows,

1. Assign the following driver letter:  from the selection list provided, select an available driver letter.
2. Mount in the following empty NTFS folder: choose this option and then type the path to an existing folder or click browse to search for or create a folder to use.
3. Do not assign a drive letter or drive path: Choose this option if you want to create the partition without assigning a drive letter or path.

Use the Format Partition page to determine whether and how the volume should be formatted.
In the Format Partition dialog box, do one of the following,

1. If you don't want to format the volume right now, click do not format this volume, and then click next.
2. To format the volume with the default settings, click next.

• Click next, confirm your options, and then click Finish.

• Right click on the My Computer and select "Properties".
• Click on the "Advanced System Settings" located at left side.

• In the Advanced tab of the System Properties locate the Performance group and click on the "Setting" to reach "Performance Option.
• In the performance option window click on the "Advanced" tab.
• In the Advanced tab of Performance Option locate the Virtual Memory group and click on "Change" to reach at the "Virtual Memory" Window.
• Uncheck the "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" check box to set virtual memory yourself.
• To set the virtual memory select the desired drive and see the recommended size and currently allocated size.
• Then select "Custom size" option.
